Ms. DeWolfe
I was born, raised, and educated in Rhode Island. Fresh out of university, I started my first adult job as a developmental reading teacher for seven and eight grades. As a young mother, I went back to school to earn my Master of Arts degree in English Literature. Later, I continued to work in a wide variety of educational settings. In rural Nova Scotia, Canada, I coordinated specialized educational programs for young mothers and youths in community-based programs, I developed and presented tutoring programs, family literacy workshops, and a women’s self-defense course. More recently here in California, before I came to Natomas Charter School, I taught eighth grade Language Arts, taught in a one-room home schoolhouse with students from kindergarten to grade six, and worked in a private tutoring center as the Assistant Director.
In addition, I have gained valuable life experience outside of the field of Education. I have served as first mate/chef aboard sailing vessels in the Caribbean and owned and operated a martial arts school in Nova Scotia and a custom canvas business in New Hampshire. Although working in other fields has been both interesting and rewarding, I have always come back to teaching.
When I am not teaching, my summers are spent in Canada spoiling my granddaughters. In my spare time, I love to walk my dog, watch movies, read mysteries, and solve word puzzles.
I believe that underlying any successful learning experience is basic human respect; that students must be fully engaged partners who are encouraged by their teachers to take responsibility for their own learning; and that the work must be at once both challenging and fun. The environment at ILP provides all the necessities for a successful educational experience for motivated students.
